BEVERLY DOBRINSKY
voice
Vocalist, composer, and teacher of voice and Kodaly musicianship,
Beverly received her Bmus from UBC in 1986. She directed the HUNGRY
GHOSTS, a contemporary chamber ensemble,1983·1986 and RAZOM
SESTRE, a womens Balkan ensemble, 1990·91. In 1991,
inspired by the centenary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada, she
founded ZEELLIA, creating a musical means to express her Ukrainian·Canadian
roots. Over the past 5 years , she has spent summers in rural areas
of the prairies collecting songs from the sons and daughters of
the first wave of Ukrainian pioneer immigrants. ZEELLIA performs
some of these songs and Beverly composes new music based on this
research and collection. In addition to performing with and managing
ZEELLIA, she currently directs 2 local choirs, and teaches private
voice and Kodaly musicianship classes. A native of Winnipeg,
she has made her home in Vancouver, B.C. for the past 25 years.
CARMEN ROSEN
voice
Singer, visual artist, costume and giant puppet designer, celebration
artist and mother of three, Carmen has been active in the Vancouver
arts community for the past twenty years. Significant achievements
include founding MORTAL COIL Performance Society and creating, booking,
and performing shows for thousands all over North America; singing,
recording and touring internationally with ELEKTRA Women's Choir;
singing, recording, and touring women's folk music with ZEELLIA;
creating Renfrew Ravine Sanctuary Park with a stone mosaic pathway;
and creating community celebrations for the Renfrew·Collingwood
neighbourhood. Currently she is working with her neighbourhood to
create the Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival celebrating the ravine,
nature, community, harvest, and the Asian Mid·Autumn festival.
BESSIE WAPP
voice, percussion
Musician, actor, designer, and stilt performer Bessie Wapp has
been singing with ZEELLIA since 1995. Bessie studied visual art
at ECCAD, and music at Vancouver Community College and Selkirk College
in Nelson, BC. Since 1993 she's been a co·artistic director
of MORTAL COIL Performance Society, with whom she creates and tours
theatre for young audiences across North America. She's been nominated
for 2 Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards and has performed and designed
for CARAVAN FARM THEATRE, TOUCHSTONE, RADIX, RUBY SLIPPERS, VANCOUVER
MOVING THEATRE, and PUBLIC DREAMS. In 1999 Bessie performed new
vocal works commissioned for the Songbird Project and then travelled
to Lithuania to research the music of her maternal ancestors. She
is currently arranging this music for ZEELLIA to perform and record.
ALISON JENKINS
accordion
Born into a music·loving family, Alison grew up listening
to recordings of jazz, classical and popular music. A self·taught
accordionist and clarinet player, and accomplished vocalist, Alison
began working as a professional musician in 1998 when she joined
the FLYING FOLK ARMY, a group of musicians and social activists.
In the winter of 1999, she was one of the founding members of the
LEAKY HEAVEN CIRCUS, a multi·generational theatre troupe
of actors, musicians and acrobats, which is now in its third season.
Alison so enjoyed combining music and theatre that she has gone
on to work with CIRQUE POULE, an all female clown troupe, and appeared
in CHEMAINUS THEATREs productions of LITTLE HOUSE ON
THE PRAIRIE and ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE, serving
both as musical director, and performer. Alison currently performs
with the FLYING FOLK ARMY, now working on its second album, as well
as THE BEDROOM PARROTS, an eclectic chamber trio, the Latin pop
band CANDELARIA, and ZEELLIA.
RUSSELL SHOLBERG
bass
A recent graduate of the Fine Arts program at SFU, in composition,
and electronic music, Russell has been studying upright bass with
Torben Oxbol and David Brown. Although he prefers to work with acoustic
groups in the jazz and folk genres, he has worked with a number
of electric pop groups, including a short stint with BIF NAKED.
As a freelance player, Russell records and performs with the Vancouver
bands, the FLYING FOLK ARMY, THE BEDROOM PARROTS, and ZEELLIA, as
well as being involved with an ongoing theatre/dance project with
SANTA ALOI. Some of Russells music has found its way onto
film, including DISNEYS BLANK CHECK and , more
recently, an independently distributed short entitled THANKS
FOR COMING.
AMELIA ROSE SLOBOGEAN
violin
Currently enrolled in the Music program at Vancouver Community
College, Amelia began her violin studies at the age of 5. She studied
privately with Kenneth Yunke in Vancouver for 8 years. In 1998
she co·founded the raucous, high energy Celtic
bluegrass band, FISHHEAD STEW. Based in Whitehorse, Yukon, they
toured extensively over the next 5 years playing music festivals
across Canada, Alaska and Scotland. Since quitting the band
in 2002, Amelia has delved into other musical genres and has recently
returned from a 3 month European tour where she studied
and researched gypsy music. She is currently studying with Romanian
gypsy violinist Leche Cercel and playing with her newly
formed gypsy jazz swing trio. In the spring of 2004, she recorded
on ZEELLIAs second album, WILLOW BRIDGE, and looks forward
to continuing to play with ZEELLIA as it gives her an opportunity
to get back in touch with her Ukrainian· Canadian roots and
love for Slavic music.
